Watch out for this

Medicare does not call people to sell plans, and agents may not call or knock on your door without your permission. If someone contacts you out of the blue about your Medicare, hang up or close the door. The offices listed here are places you go to, on your schedule. If you suspect fraud, call your state’s Senior Medicare Patrol or 1-800-MEDICARE.

Common questions

What are the Medicare Annual Enrollment dates?

October 15 to December 7 every year. Changes made during the 2026 Annual Enrollment Period take effect January 1, 2027.

What can I change during Annual Enrollment?

You can join, switch or drop a Medicare Advantage plan; join, switch or drop a Part D prescription drug plan; move from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage; or move from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare with a Part D plan. If you make more than one change, the last one submitted by December 7 is the one that counts.

Can I buy a Medicare Supplement plan during Annual Enrollment?

Medigap plans are not part of Annual Enrollment. You can apply any time, but outside your own six-month Medigap open enrollment window, or a guaranteed-issue situation such as your plan ending, the insurer can ask health questions in most states.

Do I have to do anything if I like my plan?

No. If your Annual Notice of Change shows nothing you object to, your plan continues automatically on January 1.

What if I miss December 7?

If you are in a Medicare Advantage plan, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 to March 31 lets you make one switch. Otherwise you need a Special Enrollment Period triggered by a life event, such as moving or your plan ending.

Is it free to get help choosing?

Yes. Meeting a licensed agent at any office listed here costs nothing, and your premium is the same whether you enroll through an agent or directly with the insurer. Your state’s SHIP program offers free counseling as well.
